Energy storage systems allow energy consumption to be separated in time from the production of energy, whether it be electrical or thermal energy. The storing of electricity typically occurs in chemical (e.g., lead acid batteries or lithium-ion batteries, to name just two of the best known) or mechanical means (e.g., pumped hydro storage). Thermal energy storage systems can be as simple as hot-water tanks, but more advanced technologies can store energy more densely (e.g., molten salts, as used in concentrating solar power).

The electric power grid operates based on a delicate balance between supply (generation) and demand (consumer use). One way to help balance fluctuations in electricity supply and demand is to store electricity during periods of relatively high production and low demand, then release it back to the electric power grid during periods of lower production or higher demand. In some cases, storage may provide economic, reliability, and environmental benefits. Depending on the extent to which it is deployed, electricity storage could help the utility grid operate more efficiently, reduce the likelihood of brownouts during peak demand, and allow for more renewable resources to be built and used.

Storage options include batteries, thermal, or mechanical systems. All of these technologies can be paired with software that controls the charge and discharge of energy.

The rapid increase in many parts of the world of generating capacity by intermittent renewable energy sources, notably wind and solar, has led to a strong incentive to develop energy storage for electricity on a large scale. Due to the (desired or imposed) growing annual share of electrical energy originating from renewable technologies subject to naturally-fluctuating power flows (like solar PV and wind), characterised by relatively low load factors, the combined installed capacities of those technologies in the future are expected to be much larger than typical/conventional electrical peak power demand.*

Electricity in its original form cannot be stored on any scale, but with the use of an Energy Storage System (ESS) it can be converted to other forms of energy which can be stored. These forms of energy can later be reconverted to electricity when needed.

Due to growing concerns about the environmental impacts of fossil fuels and the capacity and resilience of energy grids around the world, engineers and policymakers are increasingly turning their attention to energy storage solutions. Indeed, energy storage can help address the intermittency of solar and wind power; it can also, in many cases, respond rapidly to large fluctuations in demand, making the grid more responsive and reducing the need to build backup power plants. The effectiveness of an energy storage facility is determined by how quickly it can react to changes in demand, the rate of energy lost in the storage process, its overall energy storage capacity, and how quickly it can be recharged.

Energy storage can help the grid in so many ways – it allows us to save electricity for a more appropriate time or can be used in multiple applications to assist in balancing and maintaining the grid. While energy storage can be complicated, this paper is meant to break it into digestible pieces. The electricity grid is the centerpiece of the puzzle. The grid can be broken into three parts: generation, transmission, and distribution. In order to meet demand, utilities must be prepared to distribute electricity instantaneously, through a constant balance of supply and demand. The grid receives its electric current from electricity generation and in some cases from stored electricity through energy storage. In the simplest terms, energy generation controls time, from when and how we use it.

Peak demand charges are often levied by local electric utilities or grid operators based on the maximum electricity demand of a commercial and industrial (C&I) customer within a defined time interval. These charges often account for a significant portion of a C&I customer’s bill and the costs associated with demand charges have been difficult to manage. With the advent of energy storage technology, the reduction of these charges serves as the foundation of the business case for deploying C&I energy storage systems (ESSs). 

While contemplating new technology investments, it is often worthwhile to consider if there are any unintended consequences. On the small scale it could look like this: If I buy a new iPhone, do I receive a more expensive phone bill due to increased usage? For battery investments, the unintended consequences have more to do with strategically controlling the charging and discharging.For the purposes of this article, the difference between direct and indirect effects center on the time in which they occur. Direct effects occur in conjunction with an event dispatch instruction (see Figure 1). An indirect effect occurs at some other point throughout the day (see Figure 2). These effects need to be understood and accounted for by the grid operator in order to provide adequate forecasts and properly identify the appropriate resource mix to balance generation and demand.

Storage can reduce demand for electricity from inefficient, polluting plants that are often located in low-income and marginalized communities. Storage can also help smooth out demand, avoiding price spikes for electricity customers.
