During the 14th Five-Year Plan period, our country's energy development will undergo a significant shift. The previous approach of relying mainly on large-scale, centralized development will be transformed into a focus on household distributed development.This new model will combine both centralized and distributed utilization of energy resources, allowing for a more efficient and sustainable energy system.

Energy storage is the capture of energy produced at one time for use at a later time[1] to reduce imbalances between energy demand and energy production. A device that stores energy is generally called an accumulator or battery. Energy comes in multiple forms including radiation, chemical, gravitational potential, electrical potential, electricity, elevated temperature, latent heat and kinetic. Energy storage involves converting energy from forms that are difficult to store to more conveniently or economically storable forms.

Operating a reliable low-carbon power system means that energy storage is imperative – and AEMO also makes this clear.It says building the energy storage to manage daily and seasonal variations in solar and wind generation is the most pressing need of the next decade.It has consistently called for urgent investment in long-duration storage to support a low-carbon National Electricity Market – and those calls become more urgent with each coal plant retirement.By AEMO’s current calculations, outlined in the ISP, 61 GW of storage capacity is needed by 2050 under the Step Change scenario. 

Renewable energy, storage, and CHP can provide revenue streams while grid-connected, and these energy and cost savings may lower the overall cost of a microgrid and allow for the incorporation of additional microgrid components. When integrated into a microgrid, distributed energy technologies can also increase survival time during a grid outage when fuel supplies are limited.Distributed energy technologies can address specific resilience challenges but are only a part of the picture. The primary beneficiaries of DERs are the consumers who own them. Distributed PV can supply affordable electricity to households and businesses, reducing their dependence on the grid. When paired with energy storage, PV systems help shield owners from outages, such as during extreme weather events. DERs enable consumers to produce and consume electricity more in accord with their own needs and preferences. DERs can also support decarbonisation in many other ways, especially by enabling fuel switching, such as when distributed PV displaces fossil fuel-based generation, and when EVs replace internal combustion engine vehicles.

One of the keys to achieving high levels of renewable energy on the grid is the ability to store electricity and use it at a later time.Much like refrigerators enabled food to be stored for days or weeks so it didn’t have to be consumed immediately or thrown away, energy storage lets individuals and communities access electricity when they need it most—like during outages, or when the sun isn’t shining. Storage can reduce demand for electricity from inefficient, polluting plants that are often located in low-income and marginalized communities. Storage can also help smooth out demand, avoiding price spikes for electricity customers.

Battery-based energy storage can play a valuable enabling role in renewable energy adoption, but storage also can do much more. Services such as peak shifting, backup power and ancillary grid services are a small subset of the larger matrix of potential future values that batteries can provide, but storage is still too expensive to cost-effectively provide these services in most U.S. markets.

While contemplating new technology investments, it is often worthwhile to consider if there are any unintended consequences. On the small scale it could look like this: If I buy a new iPhone, do I receive a more expensive phone bill due to increased usage? For battery investments, the unintended consequences have more to do with strategically controlling the charging and discharging.For the purposes of this article, the difference between direct and indirect effects center on the time in which they occur. Direct effects occur in conjunction with an event dispatch instruction (see Figure 1). An indirect effect occurs at some other point throughout the day (see Figure 2). These effects need to be understood and accounted for by the grid operator in order to provide adequate forecasts and properly identify the appropriate resource mix to balance generation and demand.

Distributed Energy Resources (DER) are renewable energy systems or units that can be found in businesses or homes, and they provide them with power. They’re also referred to as “behind the meter” because the electricity is managed or generated behind the electricity meter in the house or business. Common examples of DER include thermal energy storage, battery storage, rooftop solar PV units, and smart meters.Generally, DERs are faster and a less expensive option when compared to high-voltage transmission lines and large power plants. And, since they’re located close to where the electricity is being used, they’re becoming increasingly popular as an alternative and enhancement to the traditional electric power grid. 

There’s a fundamental dichotomy in U.S. energy infrastructure. Power is mostly produced from resources inland, but most of the consumption is in the major population centers along the east and west coasts. Thus, we have a spiderweb of transmission and distribution (T&D) systems to get power from where it’s generated to where it’s consumed.As those load centers increasingly demand more energy, significant investments in transmission infrastructure are needed — but building out addition transmission creates congestion at the load centers, according to experts. Creating enough T&D to satisfy peak demand and avoid congestion would be like building a 32-lane highway to combat rush-hour traffic: for two hours a day it would be well used but the other 22 hours it would be overkill. And utilities dislike underused investments.

The application of the distributed energy storage (DES) system consists of energy storage systems distributed in the power distribution system and close to the end consumers. Instead of one or several large-capacity energy storage units, it may be more effective to use multiple low-power energy storage systems in the power distribution area.

Decisions must be made regarding whether DER policies will include sector-specific targets such as DER deployment in the transportation, industrial, commercial and residential sectors. Where investments and incentives are being proposed for the use of DER technologies, policies may also set targets for a portion of the sources being directed to those specific sectors and/or to disadvantaged communities, consistent with the municipality’s environmental justice goals. Decisions must also be made regarding whether “EV ready,” “renewable ready” (wind, solar, geothermal, biomass, etc.) or “demand response readiness” should be required for new construction, to facilitate future installation or expansion of such systems.
